Eat Healthy – Eat Sausage
If you’re like me, you love a good bratwurst or Italian sausage once in a while. But you probably are watching what you eat, so you only indulge occassionally. Sausage bought from the store or butcher is almost always loaded with fat, sugar, salt, and who really knows what else! Have you ever heard of a healhty sausage? Neither had I, that is until I learned how to make sausage myself where I choose the ingredients.
You can make delicious homemade sausage that is’nt nearly so full of calories, sodium, chemicals, or preservatives.
Here are some great tips for making healthy sausage:
- Grind your own meat and trim off the fat. Commercial sausage is loaded with as much as 40% fat. If you grind the meat yourself with a meat grinder, you can make a much healthier sausage by reducing or eliminating the fat.
- Use a natural sweetener. Instead of sugar, use honey, molasses, or unrefined organic sugar. Many sausages are loaded with sugar and natural sweeteners are healthier options.
- Cut out the salt! Sausages from the store have unbelievable amounts of sodium. When you make your own sausage, you choose how much salt to add, if any. But watch out for sausage seasoning mixes, which also have a lot of salt. Follow a recipe and season with herbs, which add great flavor without the sodium.
Getting the seasonings and taste down just right can take some experimentation. Start out with a recipe and modify it to suit your dietary needs. Try making small batches and do little taste tests as you make it. Just take a pinch of your fresh ground sausage, fry it up in a pan, and see if it tastes OK. Then you’ll have an idea of what adjustments you need to make to the ingredients. Enjoy!
