Jerky

Jerky Wake-Up Call

A new company has just emerged on the jerky scene with an exciting new product, caffeinated beef jerky called Perky Jerky.  Now you can climb out of your afternoon doldrum with an energy blast delivered by your favorite snack, jerky.

Perky Jerky boasts 150mg of caffeine in every bag — almost double the the 80mg in a can of Red Bull.  According to the company website, the idea for the product originated “after a long, hard night of energy-drink-cocktail-fueled libation” at a ski lodge. The next day, the skiers ate some beef jerky from an open bag that had been drenched in energy drink the night before.

“Much to [the skiers'] delight, the jerky had retained its original flavor, but had been made more tender by the accident,” the website relates. “What’s more, … they realized they’d been given an extra boost — the jerky had taken on some of the pep of the energy drink. On the next lift ride up, the greatest innovation in jerky since cracked pepper was born.”

All this excitement over the energized jerky begs the question, can you make your own version of homemade energized jerky?  Definitely!  I bet you could marinate your own jerky in an energy drink or add powdered guarana (a caffeine potent herb) to your favorite jerky recipe. I’ll be experimenting with some recipes and I’ll let you know.

Do you have a great recipe for your own version of Perky Jerky? I’d love to hear about it!

Jerky – Best Hurricane Food

HurricaneHurricane season is here! If you live in a potential hurricane zone, you’ve got to be prepared if you’re gonna “ride it out.”  To get ready for the storm, you’ll need plenty of water, flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food. One of the best food choices is jerky.

Jerky has been around for thousands of years, invented in the most primitive conditions. If a hurricane hits in your area, you could instantly be transported to cave man days and you’ll really appreciate this beloved snack food.  Did you know that you can add jerky to almost anything and make it better, like canned soups, crackers, or even sprayable cheese?

Store-bought jerky can be expensive and full of unwanted salts, chemicals, and preservatives. Have you ever thought about making it yourself? It’s fun and easy.  Make a batch today and save it for a “rainy day”.  ;-)
